Lithograph
This is a printing process. A small stone, or metal plate is used. The printer, usually with the artists supervision covers the plate with a sheet of paper which are then run through the printer.
Serigraph
Also called silk-screen is made from a stenciled design. The design is also worked into a wire mesh or nylon. The differnt styles of serigraphs:
Hand-Seperated Serigraphy In this process the human eye identifies each color in the image and the patterns are separated and cut into stencils by hand.
Hand-Pulled Serigraphy In this process the artist applies the ink to the substrate and uses a hand-pulled squeegee and removes the work manually from the printing table. Hand-pulled in today's market can also mean that a semi-automatic press was used to appy the inks but the print is removed from the press by hand.
Artist Proof
One of the first impressions printed as the artist reviews the printmaking process. These prints are not part of the standard edition. Typically its 5-10% of the total edition. Originally, artist's proofs were intended for the artist's private collection and used as part of the artist-publisher agreement. The value of the artist proof is greater than the prints in the standard edition. The initial A/P or words "artist proof" is penciled at the botom of the print.
Medium or Media
This term refers to the material and techniques used to produce a work of art.
Etchings
Made from copper or zinc plates. A sticky substance called ground is used to cover the plate. An artist then uses a sharp tool to sketch his design into the ground, then the plate is inked. The ink stays in the etched lines, paper is laid over the plate and the package is put through a press where pressure transfers the ink to paper.
Limited Edition
This means that an artwork is published in a pre-determined
edition size, and then the plates or negatives are destroyed. The edition is limited because after all work in the edition is sold, that particular image cannot be made again. Edition sizes are limited primarily to enhance the value of the artwork.
Giclee
Giclee is a French term roughly meaning "spray of ink", which describes the digital printing process. A giclee is a high resolution digital print made from an archival ink and media combination. It is also a recognized the fine art print category like lithographs and serigraphs. Giclee is considered the world's best technique for reproducint orginal works of art and for printing digitally created art and fine art photography. Giclee printmaking has opened up new markets for one-of-a-kind amd short run limited edition artwork. These prints look and feel like original art. Color is much richer and more saturated than other types of printing. Giclee provides more resolution and more reproducible colors than other printmaking techniques.
